Patient had two teeth knocked out

Today a medical clinic that we work with referred a patient who had a traumatic experience.

This 12 year old girl's schoolmate whipped her in the mouth with a bicycle chain, resulting in her two front teeth being knocked out (avulsed tooth) of her mouth. She came in still bleeding and holding a cold compress to her wound. She was sobbing quietly at the loss of her tooth and the laceration of her upper lip.

When our team of doctors asked her for the teeth that were knocked out, she replied that she did not have them and she did not look for them. The doctors then proceeded to check her for any broken bones in her mouth, stitch her laceration and stop the bleeding.

Our team was rather upset that such an incident could have happened to this pretty girl who had straight teeth.

Omni Nurses' Day 2009 Celebration

Omni Dental Centre celebrated Nurses' Day 2009 for our team today with a sumptuous lunch in appreciation for their dedication & professionalism.

In addition, we celebrated Polly's birthday (which happens to fall on 02/08/09)

Return of the Intern

Today, we had the privilege of welcoming back our dental intern from 2007, Ms Joan Low.

She is currently in her 3rd year of her Chemistry degree at the National Technological University (NTU).

It was a joy to catch up on old times and to update each other about the latest happpenings in our lives. She even brought some delectable macarons which the staff enjoyed thoroughly.

Braces for Faces - After the Surgery

Siti mad a post operative call to Yin today. He had his orthognathic surgery done on 17 July 2009 and spent 2 days in hospital.

Mum says that he is recovering well but is rather uncomfortable because his face has swollen to the size of a balloon. He is still on a liquid diet and he is looking forward to some good food soon.

We are glad that the procedure went off without a hitch.

Priorities

Recently Siti took a taxi ride and she got caught in a traffic jam. She commented that there were so many cars in Singapore and that despite the hefty disincentives to own and use a car, Singaporeans seem undeterred, spending vast amounts of money indulging in this luxury.

To her surprise, her taxi driver, who was recently retrenched, revealed that he was driving a taxi in order to afford such a luxury - his car!

This reminded me of a patient from some time back, who decided not to fix his teeth because he chose to go on a one month vacation touring the whole of China instead.

This begs the question as to whether health is a necessity or is it a discretionary expenditure.

A costly "Sweet" bribe - The Op

We dispatched a team to the operating theatre yesterday to treat our six year old patient who come in pain several weeks ago. Our team arrived with our dental equipment at 7:30 am and were ready to receive the patient at 8 am.

Within 45 minutes, we did 4 restorations and 2 extractions for him before he was back in the arms of his parents.

The consequence of the sweets is the added cost of the theatre fees and the anaesthesia fees, not to mention the parents' and child's agony. In addition, early loss of deciduous teeth could give rise to the crowding of his adult teeth and more dental work!

Braces for Faces - Going for Surgery

Yin started braces with us on 18 July 2008. He had a jaw problem underlying what appeared to be crooked teeth. He agreed to a treatment plan which involved a surgical resizing of his jaw together with his orthodontic treatment.

Both he and his mum have been badgering us to get him to surgery before he started his first year university education in early August. The problem with this approach is that some times, the teeth are not in their correct position with each jaw yet. This can complicate the surgery as the surgeons would have a tough time trying to piece together the disarticulated jaws.

Anyway, at their insistence, we placed the surgical hooks today and referred him to the oral and maxillofacial surgeon to assess whether they were comfortable to proceed with the orthognathic (jaw) surgery.

Omni Dental Welcomes Dr Tohani

Today is Dr Sapna Tohani first day with us. Dr Tohani hails from the United Kingdom and she was awarded the Master of Clinical Dentistry in Prosthodontics by the University of Edinburgh in 2004.

She is currently lecturing at the Faculty of Dentistry, National University of Singapore, teaching in the undergraduated programme.

As Dr Tohani's children are still very young and she has decide to start on a part-time basis. She intends to increase her sessions as her children grow up.

Second Anniversary of Prime Practice Programme

It has been two years ago since we made the decision to participate in the Prime Practice programme. We will be completing this programme by the end of this year and graduating to the Masters programme.

Over the last two years, we have made three trips to Sydney for the dentists' workshop and the last two workshops, also to be held in Sydney, will be in August and December.

We look forward to completing this programme and bringing Omni Dental Centre to the next level of service to our patients.
